Workspace for Nonprofits is getting 10 new AI tools for free. Are they worth your time?

Back in January, Google rolled out Gemini as an included feature for all subscribers using Workspace for Business. Between all of their Gemini overlay tools for various Workspace apps like Drive, Docs, and Sheets, various note-taking and text summary tools, and NotebookLM, there’s a lot to explore already. This month, they’ve announced that even more features are being pushed out to Workspace for Nonprofit account holders.

Workspace for Nonprofits?

Google Workspace for Nonprofits is a subscription for Workspace Business that includes much of the functionality of a Google Workspace Business Starter account– the main difference being more storage offered in Google Drive, and the fact that it’s free for qualifying organizations.

We’ve heard mixed responses from our various Google Workspace clients about Gemini AI tools being added to the Workspace suite of tools, but by and large it doesn’t seem to be winning over new users who weren’t already enthusiastic about AI: they even ran a study across Nonprofit organizations that found fewer than half of the employees in a typical nonprofit is using AI during the workday. Perhaps some of these features could draw in new users!

AI features coming to Workspace for Nonprofit subscribers

There’s a lot here, so we’ve only pulled some highlights and listed the rest at the bottom.

Gems

Gems are your custom AI experts for help on any topic. Gems can be anything from a career coach or brainstorm partner to a coding helper. Get started with our suite of premade Gems, or build your own custom Gems tailored to your unique needs. You might compare this tool to creating a custom GPT in ChatGPT.

Gemini Live presents AI responses in the form of spoken responses, to give the illusion of a conversation with the user. You can ask questions, interrupt, and receive responses in the form of natural sounding conversation.

Mind Maps in NotebookLM

Mind Maps are a new feature to NotebookLM, which attempt to visualize the contents of your Notebook with a broad-scoped overview that you can restructure as you see fit.
